Thanksgiving Day, one of the biggest American festivals, was made a national holiday during the Civil War (1861-1865), when President Lincoln wanted to strengthen the Union and patriotism and so on. To make Thanksgiving Day holiday, Lincoln used a very positive story about Indians and Pilgrims eating a feast together in friendship in the 17th century (like in this picture).
