"The Star-Spangled Banner" (song) is performed by celebrity singers before big sports events, like the American Football championship game (the Super Bowl). And there are many different genres of music used to perform it: jazz, folk, rock, heavy metal, classical, and so on. Click on the three versions below by Beyonce, James Taylor, and Jimi Hendrix and compare them!
*NOTE: Beyonce sang the anthem before the Super Bowl in 2004 when America felt good about the Iraq War. American football is a militaristic sport. Notice the jet planes and military men in the video.
James Taylor played and sang the anthem before an NBA championship game in 2008.
Jimi Hendrix played the anthem at Woodstock in 1969, a famous rock concert during the Vietnam War, and he may have been protesting against war, using his guitar to make the sounds of bombs falling and exploding and people screaming.
