The story about Thanksgiving that many American children learn in school is that in the 17th century the English Pilgrim settlers in New England were helped by friendly Indians and had a big feast of friendship with them, the Pilgrims thanking God for helping them survive in the "new world," etc. The reality was very different. . . Although the Pilgrims did learn about various kinds of new foods (corn, squash, pumpkins, etc.) from the local Indians, they also often fought and killed Indians, gave them diseases, and took their land.
