Americans have a holiday on New Year's Day, but they don't do anything special or eat any special foods on that day. Instead, the night before on New Year's Eve they go to parties,, drink too much, and kiss and shout at midnight.

"Auld Lang Syne" (= long ago, or the good old days) is a famous New Year's Eve song that Americans play and hear every New Year's Eve. Interestingly, it's an old Scottish song written by Robert Burns in the 18th century. It became popular for American New Year's Eve in the early 20th century. And the tune is played in Japan at graduation (Hotaru no Hikari). Here are some versions on Youtube.
